Mine waste revegetation consists of the closure of
entire mining areas where shaping, topsoiling,
hydroseeding
and other
erosion control
checks are implemented. The
land rehabilitation
of open cast surface mines under extremely difficult conditions have
been successfully carried out on various mines in and around the African
continent.
A five year contract with Hydromulch saw the start
of the PMC Rock Dump being revegetated where slopes in excess of
70 metres in height were hydraulically seeded. The dump was capped
with vermiculite waste and then hydraulically seeded with a selected
grass mixture, fertiliser, mulch and Earthbound soil binder. The
hydroseeding mixture formed a porous crust that stabilised the loose
surface material remaining intact until conditions for germination
were favourable.
